Yao Kuan is extremely intelligent, has a wide range of knowledge and a strong memory, and is good at astronomical calculations. His works are especially about words, seals, official seals and techniques. Later, Yao Kuan filled the official position with shade. When Lv Yihao and Li Guangshuai were in Jiangdong, they both recruited Yao Kuan to the shogunate. Treacherous court official Qin Gui refused to appoint Yao Kuan because of old grievances. Since then, Yao Kuan has been recommended by He Yunzhong, Xu Lin, Zhang Xiaoxiang, etc., and served as the minister of ministers and privy council.
Yao Kuan collected the facts of using crossbows in ancient and modern times and the techniques of making crossbows, and compiled the crossbow book and presented it to the court. His other works include Xixi Collection, Notes on Historical Records, Supplementary Notes on the Warring States Policy (The Warring States Policy published by Yao in Tokugawa was collected by Waseda University in Japan, but not by Qing Jiaqing's study room) and Xixi. Yao Kuan left only five poems.
