Habitat of ephedra

Produced in Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, northern Gansu, northern Qinghai and the southern and northern foothills of Tianshan Mountain in Xinjiang. It often grows in dry desert areas and dry foothills, and can also grow in sandy saline-alkali land. Large-scale communities are often formed in areas with sufficient water, or mixed with xerophytes such as Haloxylon ammodendron, Tamarix chinensis and Calligonum mongolicum. Mongolia is also distributed. Homotypic specimens were collected from Qilian Mountains in Gansu and Qaidam in Qinghai.
