The Classic of Chinese Studies "Mozi": Annotations of the original text by Gaolin

Bei Gaolin

Qinzi bowed again and again and said: "I dare to ask the right person to build up the soil as high as possible to come to our city. The firewood and soil are all on it. I think it is sheep and Guizhou. The oars are all in front, and the city is under control, and the soldiers and crossbows are all ready. What can be done?” The generals of Sheep and Guizhou are clumsy, enough to work the soldiers, but not enough to harm the city. Defend the city of Taicheng, facing Sheep and Guizhou, with giants on the left and right, twenty feet each, and marching thirty feet across the city. Use strong crossbows (2), use skills and techniques, and use strange weapons to attack them. However, the attack of Sheep and Guizhou was defeated. .

Prepare a chariot for carrying crossbows. The material is generous and one foot per square (3), and the length is equivalent to the thinness and thickness of the city. It has two axles and three wheels. The wheels are in the basket and weigh down the upper basket. There are two plants on the left and right sides, and there are Hengzhi on the left and right. The left and right Hengzhi are both in a circle, with an inner diameter of four inches. The crossbows on the left and right are tied to the plant (4), and the string is hooked to the big string. The crossbow arm is flush with the basket in front and back, the basket is eight feet high, and the crossbow shaft is three feet and five inches below the basket. Liennu machine Guo Tongtong (5), one stone thirty jun. Lead the string deer Changnu (6). The basket is three-and-a-half inches wide, with a hook distance on the left and right, three inches square, a wheel thickness of two inches, a hook distance of four inches from the arm, a thickness of seven inches, and a length of six feet. The horizontal arms are as high as the outside of the basket, with a foot length of five inches, a span of six inches, and a thickness of three inches. It is as long as a basket, has a slender body, and can be moved up and down. It is a weapon that weighs one stone, and is surrounded by five inches of wood. The arrow is ten feet long, with a rope at the end of the arrow, like Ru Ge shooting (7), and using grinding to curl up (8). The crossbow has an arrow height of three feet and its arm is three feet high. It can be used countless times, and it can shoot sixty crossbows (9), but it can use small arrows to leave nothing behind. Ten people own this car.

Then there were bandits, and they built tall buildings with arrows (10) and shot arrows at the top of the city.

Notes

(1) "Beigaolin" is one of Mozi's chapters on city defense tactics. It mainly explains how to deal with the enemy's tactics by using a condescending siege method. (2) The word "shoot" should be added after "strong crossbow". (3) The word "方一" is suspiciously placed before the word "Chi". (4) The word "tie" should be read as "tie". (5) The word "tong" should be used as "yong". (6) "Channu" should be read as "Lu Shou". (7) "Ge" should be replaced by "彰". (8) "Mo" should be replaced by "磿". (9) "人" should be replaced by "入". (10) "Tao" should be read as "suitability".

Qin Huali bowed repeatedly and said: "Excuse me: If the enemy piles up earth and builds a high platform, causing a condescending effect on our city, the wood, earth and stone will be put up together to build a high platform. The soldiers came together from the high-mountain mountain called Yangqian Mountain, using large shields as cover, and suddenly they were close to our city. They used swords and arrows at the same time. How should we deal with it?"

Mr. Mozi replied: Are you asking about the defensive method against the "Sheep and Guizhou" attack? The "Sheep and Guizhou" siege method is a stupid method for those who lead troops to fight. It will only make their own soldiers exhausted and not enough to pose a threat to the defenders. As long as the defenders continue to build a so-called "Taicheng" on the top of the city, they will still maintain a condescending attitude towards Yang and Guizhou. The left and right sides of the Taicheng will be connected with large logs, with a width of twenty feet on each side. This kind of temporary Taicheng is also called Xingcheng, and it is thirty feet high. Use powerful bows and arrows to shoot at the enemy, and rely on "techniques" and exquisite weapons to deal with the enemy. In this way, the attack using the Sheep and Guizhou method will fail.

To deal with the towering attack, you can also use a repeating ballista. The wood used to build this kind of cart must be one foot square, and its length must be equal to the thickness of the city wall. There are two axles and three wheels. The wheels are installed in the carriage. There are two upper and lower carriages, two uprights on the left and right, and two cross beams. The left and right ends of the cross beams are round tenons with a diameter of four inches. The handles are The arrows are tied to the pillars on the left and right sides, and the bow strings are hooked together and connected to the big string. The bow handle is flush with the carriage front and rear, the height of the carriage is eight feet, and the bow axle is three feet and five inches away from the carriage below. The "jikuo" of the Liannu is made of copper and weighs one hundred and fifty kilograms. Use the windlass to draw the bowstring. The circumference of the carriage is three and a half. There are "hook spans" on the left and right sides. The "hook spans" are three inches square. The wheels are one foot and two inches thick. The hook arms are one foot and four inches wide, seven inches thick and six feet long. The horizontal arm is flush with the outer edge of the carriage, and a horizontal handle called "gai" is installed one foot and five inches away from the end of the arm. The handle is six inches wide, three inches thick, and the length corresponds to the carriage.

It is also equipped with a sighting device that can be adjusted up and down when entering or exiting. Then use wood that is five inches in size to make a crossbow bed. The bed weighs one hundred and twenty kilograms. The arrow is ten feet long, and the tail is tied with a rope, just like an arrow used to shoot a bird in the air is tied with a thin silk rope, so that the arrow can be retrieved, but here it is rolled up with a windlass. The arrows are three feet above the crossbow arm. There is no fixed number of arrows to use, but at least sixty arrows must be made to go in and out. There is no need to retract the small arrows. A repeating ballista like this can be used by ten people in charge.

In order to successfully resist the enemy's attack, high buildings were built to shoot at the enemy, and a thick covering of straw had to be woven on the city to block and collect the enemy's arrows.
