Pneumothorax is lung qi deficiency in traditional Chinese medicine, so we should start from this aspect.

1) lung qi deficiency

Symptoms: pale complexion, spontaneous sweating and fear of wind, mental fatigue and laziness, low and timid voice, cough with thin phlegm, light and fat tongue, thin and white fur and weak pulse.

Syndrome analysis: Congenital deficiency, kidney-qi deficiency or lung-qi deficiency due to chronic illness, pale appearance of health, spontaneous sweating and fear of wind, lung-qi deficiency can not control qi, so fatigue, laziness, low voice, lung-qi deficiency, lung-qi failure, cough, white and thin phlegm, pale and fat tongue and weak pulse can be seen.

2) Deficiency of lung yin

Symptoms: emaciation, dry lips and nasopharynx, dry cough and shortness of breath, or coughing a little sticky phlegm, red cheekbones, hot flashes and night sweats in the afternoon, red tongue with little fur and rapid pulse.

Syndrome analysis: Chronic illness due to lung yin deficiency leads to emaciation, and insufficient body fluid can not be transported out, so the mouth, lips and nasopharynx are dry, dry cough and shortness of breath, phlegm is less sticky, cheekbones are red, and hot flashes and night sweats occur in the afternoon. Red tongue, little fur and rapid pulse are the symptoms of lung yin deficiency. 3) Deficiency of both lung qi and yin

Symptoms: pale face, red cheekbones, listlessness, low voice, shortness of breath, occasional white sputum or blood in sputum, cough weakness, night sweats and spontaneous sweating, fear of wind, hot flashes in the afternoon, anorexia, emaciation, red tongue, teeth marks on the edge, little moss and weak pulse.

Syndrome analysis: the lung is deficient in both qi and yin, and the lung does not control qi, then you will see fatigue, lazy speech, low voice, cough, shortness of breath, cough weakness, qi deficiency and stagnation of body fluid, then you will see white and thin phlegm. Deficiency of lung collaterals and blood in sputum. Night sweats are caused by yin deficiency forcing body fluids to leak out. Qi deficiency leads to spontaneous sweating and fear of wind. Lung disease and spleen, transport and transformation loss of health, insufficient source of qi and blood, less food, pale face, thin body. Internal heat due to yin deficiency, hot flashes in the afternoon, and inflammation of cheekbones due to deficiency fire. The tongue is red, with teeth marks on the edge, little fur and thin pulse, which is characterized by deficiency of both qi and yin.

treatment according to syndrome differentiation

1) Treatment of lung qi deficiency: tonifying lung qi.

Prescription: Bufei Decoction. In the prescription, Radix Codonopsis, Radix Astragali and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae reinforce the lung and consolidate the exterior, Cortex Mori and Fructus Aurantii diffuse the lung, Radix Asteris and Radix Glycyrrhizae relieve cough and resolve phlegm.

If the chest pain is very serious, you can add Allium macrostemon to relieve the pain by activating yang qi. Poria, Pinellia ternata and Magnolia Officinalis can be added when the tongue coating is white and greasy to eliminate dampness and phlegm.

2) Treatment of lung yin deficiency: nourishing lung yin.

Prescription: Baihe Gujin Decoction. In the prescription, Ophiopogon japonicus helps lily moisten the lungs, Scrophularia helps keep in good health, and Rehmannia glutinosa nourishes kidney yin, so as to suppress the deficiency of lung meridian fire. Angelica sinensis and Paeonia lactiflora nourish blood, soften liver and calm liver fire, while Fritillaria moistens lung and relieves cough. Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis can be added to disperse lung for patients with shortness of breath, Cortex Lycii, Radix Bupleuri, Rhizoma Anemarrhenae and Carapax Trionycis for patients with hot flashes, and floating wheat for those with night sweats to stop sweating.

3) Treatment of deficiency of both lung qi and yin: supplementing qi and nourishing yin.

Prescription: Bufei Decoction and Lily Gu Quan Decoction. Zhong Fang's Dangshen. Astragalus membranaceus and Atractylodes macrocephala reinforce lung qi and consolidate exterior. Lily, Ophiopogon japonicus nourish yin and moisten lung. Angelica sinensis, Radix Paeoniae Alba and Radix Scrophulariae nourish yin and blood, while Cortex Mori and Fructus Aurantii diffuse lung and replenish qi. Radix Asteris, Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae and Radix Glycyrrhizae have antitussive and expectorant effects.

If the diet is reduced, lentils, yam, nutmeg, endothelium corneum gigeriae Galli and spleen and stomach can be added. Remove greasy products of Radix Rehmanniae, Radix Ophiopogonis and Radix Scrophulariae. For patients with severe yin injury, Cortex Lycii, Carapax Trionycis, Mume Fructus and Triticum aestivum can be added to clear away heat and sweat.
