origin
Cantonese is called Cantonese and Guangfu dialect in Guangdong. Cantonese is called vernacular in Guangxi, and Han residents who use Cantonese are called vernacular people. It is widely used in central and western Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and southeastern Guangxi in southern China, as well as overseas Chinese communities in some countries in Southeast Asia, Europe and America.
Cantonese is called "Tang dialect" in Chinatown in the United States. The names "Guangfu dialect" and "provincial dialect" refer to the old guangzhou fu area. ?
Its name comes from China's ancient appellation "Yue" or "Yue" to the coastal area south of the Yangtze River. In ancient books, Yue means Yue, which was very common in ancient times. For the tribes in the coastal areas south of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, they are often collectively referred to as "Yue", and in the literature they are called Baiyue, Baiyue and. Guangdong is called "Nanyue" in Historical Records and "Nanyue" in Hanshu.
After the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the meanings of "Yue" and "Yue" began to differ. The former is mostly used in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Wu-speaking areas, while the latter is mostly used in Lingnan and Guangdong areas, which has long been a general term for Lingnan areas. Later, the appellation of Guangdong and Guangxi was distinguished. "Guangdong" refers to Guangdong, and Guangxi is called "Guangxi" for short.
The source of Cantonese is the elegant language from the northern Central Plains and the Chu language of Chu State. From the Han Dynasty to the Tang and Song Dynasties, people from the Central Plains migrated to Lingnan continuously, which promoted the development and stereotypes of Cantonese. Cantonese has not changed much since Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
However, Li Xinkui, a linguist, believes that "the earliest source of Cantonese should be the result of Chu people moving south and Chu language coming south". The phonetic features of Cantonese today are very close to those of Sui and Tang Chinese (Li Xinkui's Cantonese dialect).
