An internationally renowned scholar?
Before starting today’s micro class, I would like to introduce someone to you - the famous scholar Wang Guowei. Maybe some readers already know about him, but I would like to introduce him in detail here.
Wang Guowei is an outstanding scholar in modern Chinese academic history and an internationally renowned scholar. He has been engaged in literature, history and philosophy for decades. He was also the first person in modern China to use the viewpoints and methods of Western philosophy, aesthetics and literature to analyze and comment on Chinese classical literature. He was also the pioneer in the history of Chinese history that combined history and archaeology, and established a relatively Systematic modern standards and methods.
He, together with Liang Qichao, Chen Yinke and Zhao Yuanren, are known as the "Four Great Mentors" of the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Studies, and are pioneers in China's new academic field. Outstanding achievements in the field.
You may not know much about such many titles, but one of his most well-known works is "Human Words". Countless people have read this book, and the number of reviews on Douban alone has reached More than thirteen thousand.
However, what I would like to recommend today is not "Human Words", but "Wang Guowei: A Man's Study", which was compiled by later generations into one volume and was just published in January this year. .
II
He left the treasure of his thoughts in "a person's study"
In the preface of this book, the editor wrote:

As descendants, we edit this book not only to commemorate Mr. Wang’s contribution to Chinese thought and culture, but also to enlighten readers and allow them to enter Wang Guowei’s soul through words. "Collection of Chinese Famous Paintings" in Wang Guowei's Eyes
"Collection of Chinese Famous Paintings" was originally called "Album of Ancient Famous Paintings". As the name suggests, all the paintings collected in it are It is a painting by a famous ancient painter. Wang Guowei wrote a preface to this album in 1908. The original text of the third paragraph of the article is as follows:
The owner of Pingping Pavilion is as heroic as a cloud, and he is very ancient. There is a cave full of emotion, and a haze of fear and fame. It is to use up all the old treasures and conquer hundreds of families... hoping to leave a famous name forever and be widely known among the people.
The "Master of Pingping Pavilion" in the article refers to Di Baoxian, the founder of "The Times". The first three sentences describe Di Baoxian's love for calligraphy and painting. He was afraid that famous paintings would decline, so he collected them with all his heart. In the last sentence, Wang Guowei also expressed the hope that the famous painting can be treasured forever, attract the attention of the world, and be known to the world.
Next, he described the significance of the publication of "Collection of Chinese Famous Paintings". Based on Wang Guowei's original text, Intensive Reading Jun interpreted it as follows:
First: He believes that my country's calligraphy and painting have always been the most important It is a private collection and is not easily exposed, so scholars often have no paintings to refer to. The famous paintings are collected into one volume to facilitate scholars to copy and study;
Second: "Those who stretch and then relax are the way of civility and martial arts; those who work and seek rest are the feelings of life." Simple. To put it simply, when living in this world, one must know how to relax and take a rest when it is time to rest. But how do we rest? Wang Guowei believed that looking at these paintings "can be a place to rest", which is very good for physical and mental pleasure;
Third: He believed that Chinese painting has its own genre, and publishing famous paintings "does not "The Qingfly Island Kingdom alone shines with the light of the rising sun, and the motherland of Rome is specially called the country of art." Wang Guowei hopes that Chinese art can compete with Japan in the east and the motherland of Rome in the west. This will not only allow Chinese people to appreciate it, but also carry it forward to compete with foreign art, and also contribute to world civilization.
From this paragraph, we can see that Wang Guowei's scholarly thoughts looked at the world, and he often took into consideration the world significance of academic matters. He already pointed out in the "Regulations on the Literary Discipline of the University of Confucian Classics":
The person who will invent the academic field of our country must be a person who has a general knowledge of the world's academic circles, not a humble scholar. .
A frog in a well cannot become a good scholar, but looking at the world and having an open mind are what a scholar should have.
Four
Academics are an integral part of him
As a great scholar of his generation, Wang Guowei only loved to study knowledge in his life, and had no intention of pleasing the upper class and not admiration. To be prosperous, not greedy for pleasure, look at one's academic achievements with an ordinary person's mentality, let alone boss others around as a leader.
He lives a simple life with books as his companion. Although he is not good at socializing, he has close contacts with academic figures of his time such as Luo Zhenyu, Miao Quansun, and Shen Zengzhi. In addition, he also has many contacts with foreign scholars from Japan, France, etc. academic exchanges.
It can be said that learning is a vital part of his life. With his outstanding contributions, he has a unique status at home and abroad, and is known as "the last person in China's academic field in the past three hundred years." , the pioneer of scholarship in the past eighty years.”
His attention and contribution to academics have also won the respect of many people:
Liang Qichao commented on him this way: a scholar who is not only owned by China but also by the whole world;
The French sinologist Paul Pelliot said: Among the world's scholars in modern China, the only two are Wang Guowei and Mr. Chen (Chen Yuan);
Guo Moruo also said: Leave it to us is the product of his knowledge, it is like a Cuiwei pavilion, shining a strange light on the old school fortress of thousands of years;
...
If We can also be like him and strive in our own fields with no distractions. If we have a clear conscience, there will probably not be so many people complaining that "time is not with me" while still doing nothing.
As the editor of this book said, I hope you and I can have a space-time dialogue with Wang Guowei in his words. Although we read his words, what we see is him himself: his attitude towards scholarship, his modest character... If you can gain something from his words, it must be the most important thing for the master. Good respect.
