The novel begins with the Qin Yi Tuogu, Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty pacified Chen, and unified the north and the south, and continues until the peasant uprising in the late Sui Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty defeated all the heroes, and Tang Taizong ascended to power. The book describes the debauchery and cruelty of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty, the arrogance and cruelty of the Yuwen clan, and the dire straits of the common people. The book focuses more on portraying the image of a group of uprising heroes. Although they came from different classes and had different professions, they were all dissatisfied with the darkness and corruption of the Sui Dynasty, so they embarked on the road of anti-Sui uprising.

The novel has the characteristics of being good at narrative elaboration in folk literature, showing a large historical picture and numerous characters.
