Han Feizi's Theory of Foreign Storage and Its Translation

The Original Text and Translation of Han Feizi's On the Left Side of Foreign Storage;

Ying people have a national book, and the night fire is unknown. Because of the candlestick, they said, "Raise the candle." The clouds pass books and hold candles. Holding a candle doesn't mean a book. Xiang Yan took the book and said, "Those who hold candles are still bright, and those who are still bright, let them be." Yan Wang, Wang Da said that the state should govern. Governance is governance, which is not the meaning of the book. There are many such scholars in this world.

Someone wrote a letter to Guo Xiang of Yan State in the capital of Chu State. He wrote it at night, and the light was not bright enough, so he ordered the candlestick to say, "Hold up the candle!" " "When he said this, he casually wrote the word" holding a candle "on the letter. In fact, the word "holding a candle" is not the original intention of the letter.

After receiving the letter, the Prime Minister of Yan explained: "Holding a candle is advocating light! To advocate the light, we must choose talents. " The prime minister of Yan said this to his monarch, and the monarch was happy to do it, so the country was well governed.

Although the country is well governed, "holding a candle to shine on people" is not the will of faith after all. Scholars today have many similar situations.

The fable "Everything is done by Han Feizi, the foreign reserve says left" sharply satirizes some people's attitude towards random learning. Explain that learning can't be taken out of context, and you can't explain the words of your predecessors at will, so as to seek something from them. At the same time, it also warns people that when dealing with personnel issues, we should analyze specific problems and not make subjective judgments to avoid adverse consequences.
