There are three major reasons for respecting Chi You:
1. Chi You is one of the ancestors of the Chinese nation.
The roots of the Chinese nation are in Fuxi, from which three major dynasties were born: Emperor Yan, Emperor Huang, and Chiyou. Chi You is one of the ancestors of the surnames Luo, Deng, Long, Miao, Pan, Man, Ba, Fu, Xu, Su, He, Yang, Lu, Xie, Mi, Ren, Hao and Feng. The Chinese nation is called the descendants of Yan and Huang, and Yan and Huang actually include Chi You. All the Miao and Li nationalities and part of the Han nationality originated from Chi You
2. Chi You invented metal smelting and the manufacture of metal weapons.
He led the Jiuli tribal alliance, invented and used weapons in war, so future generations respected him as the "Sage of War." It was only later that Sun Tzu replaced Chi You as the Sage of Soldiers.
3. Chi You is the founder of ancient Chinese legal system.
"Chi You punished the Miao people" and was the first to establish China's legal society, so Chi You is one of the founders of Chinese civilization.
As the founder of the Chinese nation in ancient times, Chi You was worshiped like a god. It was only in the Han Dynasty that Sima Qian worshiped Confucianism and did not establish a chronicle for him, so his deeds gradually became unknown to later generations. When recording the deeds of the Yellow Emperor, Chi You appears as a villain. In Ban Gu's "Book of Han", people were divided into nine grades, and Chi You was classified as a "fool", which made later generations disgusted with him. In fact, we should rectify the name of such a great historical figure as Chi You.
