The first half, based on the Classic of Mountains and Seas and other ancient books, fictionalized the experiences of Tang Ao and others traveling overseas when Wu Zetian was in the Tang Dynasty, satirized the world and human feelings at that time, and expressed the author's social and political ideals. The second half tells the story of one hundred talented women such as Tang Xiaoshan. The language of the novel is concise and fluent, satirical and humorous.
