The earliest dictionary in China.

China's earliest dictionary: Erya.

Er Ya was written between the Warring States Period or the Han Dynasty, and the upper limit should not be earlier than the Warring States Period, because some materials used in the book came from books such as The Songs of Chu, Liezi, Zhuangzi and Lv Chunqiu, which were works after the Warring States Period.

In history, Erya is highly respected because it summarizes and explains the ancient meanings of many ancient words in pre-Qin ancient books and has become an important reference book for Confucian scholars to read and understand classics. Erya was first recorded in Hanshu Yiwenzhi, but the author's name was not included.

Its author has always had different views. Some thought it was done by Confucius' disciples, others thought it was done by Duke Zhou, and later Confucius and his disciples added it. Most of the descendants think that it was done by people in the Qin and Han Dynasties. After being passed down from generation to generation, each has its own income, which was processed in the Western Han Dynasty. It's about a scholar in the Qin and Han Dynasties, sorting out and editing old books and articles in the Spring and Autumn Period, Warring States Period, Qin and Han Dynasties, and getting them step by step.

Erya contains more than 4,300 words, which are divided into 209 1 items. There are 20 articles in this book, and there are 9 articles/kloc-0. Erya is regarded as the pioneering work of China's exegetics, which has a very important influence on exegetics, phonology, etymology, dialectology and ancient philology, among which modern ci is the ci of Han Dynasty.

Erya is the first comprehensive dictionary arranged according to semantic categories in China, and it is an important reference book to dredge ancient words in ancient documents including the Five Classics.
