Zeng Guofan's Poems to His Brother

Zeng Guofan's poems to his younger brother are as follows:

Yuan Fudi is forty-one

Multiplication and division are everywhere in the world. Bow your head and worship the sheep and say everything about space.

Zeng Guofan was a famous Confucian scholar in Qing Dynasty. His life is full of twists and turns and legends. Because of his outstanding achievements, he has not only won high positions and high salaries, but also won numerous awards and titles. However, Zeng Guofan was not impatient. He clearly realized that the higher his position, the closer he was to danger.

Therefore, he is very low-key about everything. Even his letters to his younger brothers don't talk about state affairs, only mention some trivial chores, and even often care about daily chores such as chicken stalls and vegetable gardens. In fact, he just wants Cixi and others to know that he has no ambition and is just a rural man who wants land and a house.

However, he is very worried about his younger brothers. They are young and energetic, and are likely to be impulsive. If one day they accidentally say something wrong and do something wrong, the whole family will be in a disaster situation. So on my brother Ceng Guoquan's 4 1 birthday, Zeng Guofan sent him a letter, including this poem, which expressed the author's calm mood.

The poet said in his letter that there is a console table in my study. On the left are all kinds of awards from the imperial court, and on the right are many documents that denigrate me. The world is like a steelyard, there are always high-end and low-end, and it can't be absolutely accurate. But people don't have to keep it in mind all the time, as long as they follow the practice of slaughtering sheep, those gains, losses, honors and disgraces are like floating clouds in the sky.

The author quoted an allusion in the article, saying that Tu Yang was a butcher in the period of King Zhao of Chu. In those days, Wu Zixu avenged his father and helped Wu attack Chu. The king of Chu got the help of Tu Yang during his escape, so that he wouldn't starve all the time.

Later, the king of Chu returned to China and regained power. He didn't forget the benefactors who helped him, so he sent someone to ask Tu Yang to be an official in the court. The other party declined politely and continued to guard the stall selling mutton.

Zeng Guofan is familiar with ancient poems and books, and he likes to ponder Zhuangzi's thoughts at ordinary times. He knows that he and his brothers are happy from now on, so he must not be rich and arrogant, otherwise he will blame himself for not keeping his family business.

Therefore, in this poem, the author warned his relatives that it is heaven to retire after work, and we should not forget the teachings of the ancients. Poets are usually very self-disciplined, going to bed early and getting up early every day, insisting on practicing calligraphy, recording their own experiences, writing letters to their families, and constantly transforming and sublimating their thoughts.

Zeng Guofan's poems are unpretentious, but full of rational interest. The author uses "multiplication and division" to express the careful calculation in the world, and also to compare the ups and downs and gains and losses in the world. The full moon rises and falls, and there will be peaks and valleys in the world, sometimes flowers and applause, sometimes thorns and rumors.

The poet hopes that people can follow the example of the hermit beside the meat stall, look down on the gains and losses, and be calm, so that they can enjoy the beautiful scenery with light wind and light clouds. As Zeng Guofan said, rich people will be generous, and generosity will also be rich. Life is too short to hold grudges. Only by being lenient with others and being strict with yourself can more people appreciate and respect you!
