The leaves are alternate, palmately compound leaves with 5 to 7 leaflets; the leaflets are oblong or oval, 10 to 20 cm long, 5 to 7 cm wide, with a tapered apex, a broad or slightly narrow base, and an entire edge. The flowers bloom first in early spring, with red leaves, about 10 cm in diameter or larger, clustered near the top of the branches; the calyx is cup-shaped, 3 to 4.5 cm long, with 5 shallow lobes at the top, and the lobes are broad and blunt; the petals are 5, fleshy, Oblong, 8 to 10 cm long, covered with star-like pubescence on both sides; stamens are numerous, arranged in multiple whorls, and the filaments are connate at the base.
