Yuan Tiangang lived to be 88 years old.
Yuan Tiangang (commonly written as "Gang", 547-635) was born in Chengdu (now Chengdu, Sichuan). Metaphysician and astronomer in the late Sui and early Tang Dynasties. Legend has it that he is good at "wind reading", that is, he can judge good or bad luck based on the sound and direction of the wind. He is also proficient in facial physiognomy, Liuren and five elements. In the Sui Dynasty, he was the official magistrate, and in the Wude period of the Tang Dynasty, he was the magistrate of Huojing County, Shu County. In the sixth year of Zhenguan, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty heard of his reputation and ordered him to enter the court and accept him as a think tank. In the eighth year of Zhenguan (634), at his request, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty reinstated him as the magistrate of Huojing County to allow him to return to his hometown. Yuan Tiangang died in the same year.
Baiheshan Tiangongyuan is the place where Yuan Tiangang built hermitage before he became an official and when he was fleeing chaos in his late years. It is his former residence. Yuan Tiangang was buried near Tiangongyuan after his death. After that, the imperial court ordered the Tiangong Courtyard to be renovated and expanded, but with the war and the passage of time, the Tiangong Courtyard fell into disuse. Slowly, people no longer know its specific location.
During the Tianshun period of the Ming Dynasty, someone went to visit Baihe Mountain and accidentally discovered the tombstone of Yuan Tiangang's tomb and determined the location of the tomb. At this time, the place was overgrown with weeds, and the Tiangong Courtyard had long been destroyed, so Emperor Ming Yingzong requested that Yuan Tiangang's cemetery be repaired and the Tiangong Courtyard rebuilt for worship. With the approval of Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty, the new Tiangong Courtyard began to break ground near Yuan Tiangang's tomb. The construction was finally completed in the third year of Tianshun. The main hall, Guanyin Hall, Wanniantai, Niuwang Pavilion and other buildings were built. Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty even came here to write a plaque for Tiangongyuan.
