The publication of this book has promoted the further development of materia medica. Ni's Notes on Materia Medica, his Compendium of Materia Medica and Huang Gongxiu's Seeking Truth from Materia Medica are all classic materia medica inspired by his theory.

The first column of this book is a general table of contents, examples and pictures. The first volume is the preface, which mainly introduces the basic theories of materia medica and traditional Chinese medicine in past dynasties. Firstly, this paper lists and briefly comments on 4 1 kinds of herbal works, such as Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, Bielu of Famous Doctors, Leigong Baking Theory and Tang Materia Medica, which basically reflects the general situation of the development of materia medica before the Ming Dynasty. In addition, 277 kinds of medical books, 440 kinds of classical and historical books were cited, and 7 17 of them were listed.
Compendium of Materia Medica has many versions. Except for various foreign language versions or abridged versions, there are about 72 kinds in China, which can be roughly divided into "one ancestor and three systems", namely, the ancestral version (Jinling version, Sheyuan version) and the Jiangxi version, the former version and the Zhang version. This system in Jiangxi was mainly carved for Xia Liangxin and Zhang Dingsi in the 31st year of Wanli in Ming Dynasty (1603).
