About Ma Zonghuo

Ma Zonghuo (1897-1976), whose original name was Ji, was given the courtesy name Chengkun.

Some people mistakenly call "Chengkun" "Shuikun" because of the similar shape and the same pronunciation, or they think "Chengkun" is its real name, which is all wrong.

Since around the 1830s, it has been written in Chinese characters, so its original name is rarely known. He was not named Suiyue Tower, and his later name was Suiyue Old Man.

A native of Hengyang, Hunan. Text evangelist, historian, literary critic, calligrapher, calligraphy critic.

He was educated under Wang Xiangqi and graduated from Hunan South Road Normal School. In the mid-1820s, he became a disciple of Zhang Taiyan.

He also learned calligraphy from Zeng Xi, and together with his brothers Zhang Daqian, he was the founder and director of the Zeng (Xi) Li (Ruiqing) Association.

Since the 1920s, he has served as professor, dean, and provost of Jinan University, Jinling Women's University, Shanghai China Public School, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Central University, and Hunan University.

After 1958, he became a librarian of the Central Research Institute of Literature and History, a senior editor and reviewer of Zhonghua Book Company, and participated in the compilation of ancient books by the State Council.

He is the author of "Shu Lin Zao Jian", "Introduction to Literature", "History of Chinese Confucian Classics", "The Development of Philology", "General Theory of Phonology", "Shuowen Jie Zi Yin Kao", "Shuo Wen Jie Zi Yin Dialects", "Shuowen Jie Zi Yin Qun Shu Kao", "Shuowen Jie Zi Yin Tong Ren Shuo Kao", "Huainan Jiu Annotations and Correlation", "Mo Zi Xian Execution and Correlation", "Southern History" "Correction", "Lunheng School Reading Notes", etc.
