China Academy of Fine Arts is the first comprehensive national art institution of higher learning in China, which was founded by the people of China, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture and the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. It is also the earliest institution of higher learning to implement design science in China, the birthplace of the earliest art revolutionary group in China, the only national key discipline of fine arts in China, and the first batch of national "double-first-class" world-class discipline construction universities.
China Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1928, and is called "National Academy of Fine Arts". 1929, renamed as "National Hangzhou Art Institute"; 1938, renamed as "National Art Institute"; 1950, becoming "East China Branch of Central Academy of Fine Arts"; 1958, renamed as "Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts"; 1993 was renamed as "China Academy of Fine Arts".

The predecessor of China Academy of Fine Arts is the National Academy of Fine Arts. 1928, Mr. Cai Yuanpei, then president of the university, chose Xizi Lake in Hangzhou and founded the first comprehensive national higher art college, the National Academy of Art, which opened a chapter in higher art education in China.
China Academy of Fine Arts, as the first national academy with the most comprehensive disciplines and the largest scale in China, has been relocated and renamed several times during its 90-year development, from National Academy of Fine Arts, National Hangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, National Academy of Fine Arts, East China Branch of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts to China Academy of Fine Arts today.
In this process, there are always two completely different academic contexts. One is the idea of "the integration of Chinese and Western culture" represented by the first headmaster, Lin Fengmian, and the other is the idea of "bringing forth the old and bringing forth the new" represented by Pan Tianshou. In the new century, China Academy of Fine Arts has achieved great-leap-forward development in its history by renewing its campus, inheriting its ideas, expanding its disciplines and reorganizing its departments. 20 15 was successfully selected as the first batch of key construction universities in Zhejiang province, and on 20 16, it was approved to build universities for the people's government of Zhejiang province, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture.
In 20 17, the college was selected as a national "double-class" first-class discipline construction university, and the fine arts discipline was selected as a national first-class discipline construction list. Fine arts is listed as a national key discipline, and four disciplines, including fine arts, design, art theory and architecture, are listed as first-class disciplines in Zhejiang Province.
China Academy of Fine Arts won the A+ rating in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, ranking first in the country; Art theory was awarded Grade A, ranking third in the country; Drama, film and television won the B+ rating, ranking sixth in the country. At present, the college has three Post-Doctoral Research Center: Art, Design and Art Theory.
