His research in the field of language and writing mainly focuses on ancient Chinese characters, especially the textual research of Oracle Bone Inscriptions and bronze inscriptions and the textual research of ancient books. His textual research and interpretation of ancient Chinese characters has always been famous for his meticulousness. He firmly believes that ancient Chinese characters exist objectively, and their shapes, sounds and meanings are recognizable, readable and searchable. As long as the method is proper, after in-depth study and realistic scientific analysis, most ancient Chinese characters can still be correctly identified. Yu's academic research
Oracle Bone Inscriptions Shi Lin (Zhonghua Book Company, 1979) is his representative work on ancient Chinese characters. Therefore, this book has become the most important work to study and interpret Oracle inscriptions since Luo Zhenyu and Wang Guowei. His research on ancient Chinese characters was not carried out in isolation, but combined with the knowledge of many related disciplines, thus reasonably solving the long-standing problems such as "the mysterious birds make business" and "who said a sentence of 500 words in Shangshu Zhao Gao". He made great contributions to the study of ancient history in China by using the research results of ancient Chinese characters.
Yu's book collection ranks first in the three northeastern provinces, and Changsha's book collection belongs to a bookstore in Beiping. He bought it immediately after learning about it. His collection covers classics, history, books, anthology, series, periodicals and so on. * * * There are110 kinds of 4 46 1 volume. There are many rare books in Ming and Qing dynasties, especially the anthology of Tongcheng School. Later, because of the burden of livelihood, I traded some ancient books for rice. After his death, his family donated these books to the library of Jilin University. In order to commemorate his book donation and his important contribution to Jilin University, the Library of Jilin University specially set up the "Yu Collection Memorial Room".
