There are many descriptions of snakes in Shan Hai Jing. Ancient humans regarded snakes as the source of life, and they combined the image of snakes with clouds, water and lightning.
According to the shape of snakes, the ancients created Nuwa and Fuxi, both of whom were immortals with human heads and snake bodies, and created a mythical animal that could smoke and rain based on snakes. Later, dragons also had many images and various appearances. China people also call themselves descendants of the dragon.
The image of Nu Wa is regarded as the mother of human beings, symbolizing the vulva. In The Classic of Mountains and Seas, Nu Wa is described as a goddess with a snake face. Snakes have strong reproductive ability, from which we can see that ancient humans turned their worship and hope for reproduction into images.
At the same time, Fuxi, like Nu Wa, is also a snake head. He was regarded as the totem of the two-headed snake by people at that time. Legend has it that Fuxi thinks she is the ancestor of women and the descendant of snakes. He regards snakes as ancestors and considers himself a descendant of snakes.
At the end of the Spring and Autumn Period, the State of Chu destroyed Yue, and some people from Yue fled to Fujian. They like living by the water, spending most of their time in the water and being good at using boats. They have the habit of taking snakes as totems, tattooing them and using witchcraft.
Later, for a long time, such worship remained in the descendants of some people in Fujian.
