Translation of "Ten Kinds of Adversity for Dojo"

Original text

1. Mind the body without seeking to avoid illness. If the body is not sick, greed will arise. If greed arises, you will break the precepts and retreat. Knowing that the nature of disease is empty, the disease cannot be troubled, and the pain of disease can be used as good medicine.

2. Do not seek anything in life without difficulty. If there is no difficulty in the world, arrogance and extravagance will arise. When arrogance arises, it will oppress everyone. The body is difficult and it is an illusion. Difficulty is also a source of ridicule? Take adversity as relief.

3. Don’t seek freedom from obstacles when studying your mind. If the mind is free from obstacles, then what you learn will be lost. If you learn from Lu and so on, you will not be able to achieve success. The solution to obstacles has no root, that is, the obstacles become silent, and the obstacles become freedom.

4. Don’t seek evil in your actions. If there is no demon in your actions, then your vows will not be firm. If the wish is not strong, it will not be proved. If the devil has no roots, how can it be evil? Take the demons as your companions.

5. It is easy to achieve things without asking for them. If things are easy to come by, ambition will be underestimated. If my ambition is contemptuous, I will be called capable. Success follows one's karma, things cannot be done without help, and happiness is found in things that are difficult.

6. Friendship does not seek to benefit me. If love benefits me, it will be a loss of morality. If you fail to do so, you will definitely find fault with others. There is a reason for observing love, love is dependent on fate, and bad relationships are used as material.

7. Don’t seek comfort from others. When people are comfortable, they are proud of themselves. If you are proud of yourself, you will stick to your own will. Observe that people act recklessly, but people are rewarded, and they use disobedience as a garden.

8. Give kindness without expecting reward. If virtue and hope are repaid, then there is a plan. If you have a plan, you will be famous. Bright virtue has no nature, and virtue is not real. Giving virtue is a waste.

9. See the benefits without seeking any points. If there is profit and sharing, then the infatuation will surely move. If you are obsessed with infatuation, you will do harm to yourself. Benefit in this world is empty, don't seek benefits in vain, regard sparse benefits as wealth.

10. Don’t ask for clarification when being suppressed. If you suppress the statement, I will not forget the person. If I keep others, resentment will breed. Forbearance is humility, why does it hurt me? Taking repression as the path of practice.

In this way, if you are in the way, you will get through; if you seek to get through, you will get in the way. All these obstacles become a wonderful place. ...Thus the Tathagata attained the path to enlightenment despite obstacles.

Translation

First, think about the body and do not seek to be free from disease. When there is no disease in the body, greed will arise. When greed arises, the precepts will be broken and the mind will lose its way. Understanding the illusory nature of disease, disease does not constitute trouble, so the suffering of disease can be used as good medicine.

Second, there will be no trouble if you live without seeking. If there were no troubles in the world, pride and extravagance would definitely arise. When arrogance arises, it will definitely oppress everyone. Knowing that adversity is inherently vain, how can adversity hurt us? Therefore take suffering as relief.

Third, there is no obstacle to studying the nature of mind without seeking. If there are no obstacles in the pursuit of the mind, the Taoism and karma learned will be impetuous. Those who are impetuous and reckless will definitely claim to have obtained Dharma benefits without having obtained Dharma benefits. Understand that obstacles have no roots, and obstacles will naturally disappear, so treat obstacles as freedom.

Fourth, there will be no demonic obstacles if you act without seeking. If there are no demonic obstacles in accumulating meritorious deeds, the vows will not be strong. If the vow is not strong, it must be that one has not attained the path and fruition yet claims to have attained the path and fruition. It is inferred that the demonic nature has no roots, how can the demon disturb it? Therefore, he takes the group of demons as his companions.

Fifth, it is easier to succeed if you seek things without asking for them. If things are easy to succeed, you will be careless and conceited. If my will is neglected and I am conceited, I will surely boast of my abilities. When considering the success or failure of things, they are all determined by karma. Success does not depend on ability, so taking things difficult is comfort.

Sixth, interpersonal relationships should not be beneficial to oneself. If friendship is beneficial to oneself, it will be morally wrong. If you are morally wrong, you will definitely see the faults of others. Understand that there are always causes for the strength of friendship, and closeness and distance of friendship are dependent on conditions, so we should use friendship that is detrimental to ourselves and beneficial to others as our foundation.

Seventh, do not seek to adapt to yourself when interacting with others. If others adapt to you, it will easily lead to arrogance. If you are arrogant in your heart, you will definitely be obsessed with being right. Observing people's behavior in the world, all kinds of false behaviors are difficult to understand. Everyone is just repaying the retribution of previous karma, so enemies are regarded as a garden of merit.

Eighth, charity is performed without asking for reward. If you do good deeds and hope to be rewarded, you will have a plan. If you have a plan, you will definitely seek a false reputation. We understand that giving has no inherent nature, and merit has no real nature, so we regard the virtue of giving as old shoes that can be discarded.

Ninth, see profits without asking for profit sharing. If you want to share the profits, your infatuation will definitely move. Infatuation will inevitably lead to competition for financial gain and damage to one's own morality. Understand that the interests in the world are illusory, and do not seek for them in vain, so you regard the interests as wealth and honor by neglecting them.

Tenth, do not ask for an explanation when you are wronged. If we express our grievances, we will never forget them. Keeping oneself in mind will inevitably breed resentment. If I tolerate injustice to be humble, how can injustice hurt me? Therefore, suffering injustice is a spiritual practice.

In this way, being in a situation of obstacles will lead to enlightenment, and striving for enlightenment will be full of obstacles. If you can observe with wisdom, these ten major obstacles can become a wonderful place for cultivating the Tao. ...Therefore, all Buddhas and Tathagatas achieve the path to enlightenment despite obstacles.

The ten major hindrances are the essence of Buddhism. Real gold is not afraid of fire, and steel swords are not afraid of stone grinding. We should observe it wisely and avoid all kinds of obstacles in our body and mind. , then the state of demons and evil obstacles is exactly the upper condition for achieving the reverse growth of our karma. I would like to deeply understand and practice it.
