History of Shennongjia:

Shennongjia was named after China's ancestor, Yan Di Shennong. He used this tree as a ladder, picked hundreds of herbs, saved sick and dead people, and taught people to grow crops.

1 May, 970, the State Council approved 24 communes, 2 medicinal plants and1farm in Fangxian, Xingshan and Badong as the administrative divisions of Shennongjia forest region, which is the only provincial administrative region named after "forest region" in China.

The district government is located in Baisong Town.

Shennongjia Forest Area now governs 6 towns and 2 townships: Baisong Town, Yangri Town, Hongping Town, Muyu Town, Xinhua Town, Jiuhu, Luosong Township and Xiaguping Tujia Township.

From the end of Indosinian Movement to the beginning of Yanshan Movement, there were strong folds and large-scale inclinations in Shennongjia forest area, which laid the landform skeleton of this area. The cold and warm changes of Quaternary climate left glacial landforms in some areas, which made the landforms in this area complex and diverse.

Shennongjia mountain range is located in the southwest of Shennongjia forest region, with the highest elevation of 3 105.4m, which is also the highest point in Central China. The lowest point in the forest area is Shizhu River in Xiaguping Township, with an altitude of 398 meters and a relative height difference of 2707.4 meters.

According to the morphological characteristics and genetic types of landforms in the area, it can be divided into four types of geomorphic units: structural dissolution landform, dissolution erosion landform, erosion erosion landform and accumulation landform.
