Wei's main achievements

Wei has made great achievements in phonology. The study of ancient phonology published by 1935 is his masterpiece. The book is about 300,000 words. The author expounds his own views on the stages, contents, materials, methods and conditions of studying ancient phonology and the practical problems in the study of ancient phonology. He believes that it is wrong to absolutely separate ancient sounds, near sounds and equal rhymes in the history of phonology. So at the beginning of this book, he has three explanations: first, all phonology before Guoyin today belongs to ancient phonology; Secondly, all the sound content expressed in China's language and writing is the object of ancient phonology research; Thirdly, the study of ancient phonology shoulders the task of studying China's phonology and language history. This is also the guiding ideology of his writing this book. Regarding the research materials of ancient phonology, Wei believes that ancient phonology has a long history and a vast territory, and the scope of materials should include ancient and modern, large and small, non-donation, both Chinese and foreign, and unlimited territory. In terms of materials, he proposed to use modern dialects as circumstantial evidence to construct ancient sounds; He emphasized the important role of living language and various language materials in the study of ancient sounds, and put forward the principles of "giving consideration to melody", "drawing a clear line between time and place" and "emphasizing language" in the division. The methods such as "comparison of evolution", "interpretation of conjunctions and ancient idioms" and "textual research on root changes" have not been involved by predecessors. As for the "orbital principle" put forward in On Change, it is his original creation. This book is unique in the study of phonology, which is the result of Wei's years of research on phonology and teaching. It not only brings together the experience of predecessors in studying phonology, but also creates conditions for future generations to continue their in-depth research. In addition to its phonological value, it is also an indispensable reference book for the study of dialects and exegetics, and also occupies a place in the study of Chinese phonetics, which has won high praise and appreciation from scholars at home and abroad.

During this period, Wei offered eight courses, including an introduction to phonology, dialect studies, phonological studies, folk literary speeches, phonological history and ancient phonology. In 1930s, there were three summaries in Chinese Department of Peking University, namely, Hu Shi's Outline of China Literature History, Shen Jianshi's Outline of Philology and Wei's Outline of Phonology.

Wei is one of the more successful people in phonological research after Wang Guowei. He published a series of papers on the study of ancient rhyme. For example, according to the relationship between Qieyun and the rhyme books of the Six Dynasties, this paper studies several rhyme books before Qieyan in Lv Fayan, and explains the evolution of the rhyme book system in Tang and Song Dynasties according to the differences between them, which supplements and develops the previous theories.

In phonological research, Wei attached great importance to textual research and advocated the spirit of "simple learning". He used ancient rhymes, Chinese initials and other materials to research ancient sounds, emphasizing the accuracy of materials and the rigor of methods. After the founding of New China, the textual research on the origin of the second rhyme in Qieyun and the explanation of the inconsistency of the four rhymes in Qieyun all reflected his academic characteristics. After the May 4th Movement, Wei took an active part in the movement of new culture and new ideas, and published many essays under the pseudonym "Xing" in publications such as Mangyuan and Yusi led by Lu Xun. After liberation, he was a member of the Chinese Writers Association.
