Gu's ancient books
During the years of Qianlong (1736 ~ 1795) and Jiaqing (1796 ~ 1820), the textual research in Qing dynasty reached its peak, and the Ganjia school appeared. According to the records, there were 157 scholars engaged in textual research at that time, with 2720 volumes, which shows its large scale. The rise of Ganjia School is related to the cultural compulsory policy implemented by the Qing government. The literary inquisition made scholars daunting, and they had to hide in that pile of old paper to make a living, losing the positive spirit of caring in the early Qing Dynasty. The rulers of the Qing dynasty found that such textual research was not only harmless to their own rule, but also played a role in netting scholars. Therefore, the policy of exclusive respect for Song studies was revised, and textual research was also fostered. During the years of Qianlong and Jiaqing, Siku Quanshu Library was opened and hundreds of experts and scholars were hired to sort out ancient books. The Ganjia School, based in Siku Quanshu Library, has developed rapidly.
