Yangshao culture is a culture dominated by agriculture, and the villages are big or small. Houses in larger villages have a certain layout, surrounded by a ditch, and there are cemeteries and kilns outside the village. There are mainly two kinds of houses in the village: round and square. In the early stage, there were the most round single rooms, and in the later stage, there were the most square single rooms. The walls of the house are made of mud, with grass mixed in and wood as the skeleton. The exterior of the wall is often burned after being wrapped in grass to strengthen its firmness and waterproofness.
Agricultural stone tools in Yangshao culture include stone axes, shovels and stone mills. , in addition to bone tools. In addition to agriculture, people in Yangshao culture obviously fish and hunt. Among the unearthed cultural relics are bone hooks, harpoons and arrows. In the early period of Yangshao culture, pottery was mostly made by hand and began to rotate in the middle period. Some pottery has cloth patterns and woven fabric prints, indicating that Yangshao culture has weaving and weaving handicrafts. In addition to wild animals, there are a lot of dog and pig bones in the unearthed animal bones, and there are fewer sheep bones.
The excavation of Yangshao cultural cemetery has made many contributions to people's understanding of Yangshao culture. The funerary objects and burial methods in the cemetery brought a lot of inspiration to the lifestyle, beliefs and living conditions at that time.
There are still disputes in academic circles about the internal classification, age classification and the relationship between sites of Yangshao culture. There are also different views on the social structure of Yangshao culture. Today, most scholars believe that it is mainly a patriarchal society, and the argument of early matriarchal society is now supported by fewer people. Yangshao culture shows people the social structure and cultural achievements of China matriarchal clan system from prosperity to decline.
In the early days, it was said that Yangshao culture came from the west. Archaeological excavations in Shaanxi 1960 have questioned this statement. At present, it is generally believed that Yangshao culture in Shaanxi developed after Laoguantai culture, which can be divided into three different development stages in chronological order: Banpo type, Miaodi type and Banpo late type. Longshan culture is regarded as its inheritance culture.
