Deciduous shrubs or trees, up to 10 m. Branchlets dark black and pilose. Seed kernel contains 38% oil, and sterols and palmitic acid are separated after saponification. The leaves contain methyl gallate, which has inhibitory effect on many bacteria and fungi.
