Excerpts from four major Chinese folk tales
1. "The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl": The Weaver Girl fell in love with the Cowherd and gave birth to a son and a daughter. After being discovered by the Emperor of Heaven, they met across the river. Every year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month Meet once a day and night.
2. "Meng Jiangnu": The groom died after building the Great Wall. Meng Jiangnu went through hardships to find her husband's graveyard and cried bitterly. The Great Wall collapsed, and her husband had instructions in his dream.
3. "The Legend of White Snake": The White Snake and Xu Xian fell in love, but the Taoist priest Fahai believed that humans and monsters cannot fall in love. The White Snake was finally crushed under the Leifeng Pagoda, and Xu Xian died of decadence until the Leifeng Pagoda collapsed. Only then did the white lady see the light of day again.
4. "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai": Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai were classmates for three years. They loved each other but failed to express their love. After Zhu Yingtai was forced to marry, Liang Shanbo died of illness due to grief. After Yingtai learned about it, she decided to be buried with Liang Shanbo, and the tomb turned into a pair of flying butterflies.
