Origin of the Huns·What did the Huns look like?

Unfortunately, no biological specimen of the Huns has been found. In 1927, Mongolian scholars excavated a Xiongnu tomb at the Noyansuzuktu Pass in Mobei. A complete Hun skull was found in the tomb, but unfortunately it was broken into pieces in the Central Museum of Mongolia due to poor storage. An embroidery painting of a Huns portrait was found in the coffin of another tomb. The person in the painting has thick hair, combed back, a broad forehead, huge eyes, sharp eyes, a thick beard on the upper lip, and a serious face, slightly majestic. Archaeologists believe that this should be the owner of the tomb, a Huns. In this painting, although the eyes of the Huns are embroidered in black, the pupils are embroidered with blue thread. Accordingly, some people believe that the Huns are of Turkic origin. But there are also different opinions. Zedorji Surong believes that the blue pupils are only to contrast with the black eyes to make the face look more majestic, and are not intended to be blue. The evidence for judging the Huns race based on this is not very sufficient. Therefore, we can only find clues about the appearance of the Huns from historical records. The earliest mention of the Xiongnu was "Warring States Policy", and the first person to record the history of the Huns was Sima Qian. However, he did not specifically record the appearance of the Huns, nor did the subsequent "Hanshu", "Houhanshu", and "Three Kingdoms" In particular, "Book of Jin" written by Fang Xuanling of the Tang Dynasty said that Liu Yuan was "burly and tall, with a body length of eight feet four inches and a beard more than three feet long. Beware of three red hairs measuring three feet six inches long." It was also said that Helian was vigorous. "Bobo is eight feet and five inches long, with a ten-circuit belt. He is intelligent and beautiful. In front of Huo Qubing's tomb, there is a statue of a horse stepping on a Huns. There is a Huns under the horse's belly, holding a bow in his left hand and a dagger in his right hand. The face is wide and bearded, the head is large and tilted back, the eyes are small, the lips are thick and the nose is flat, the forehead is low and the ears are large. The image in this atmosphere may be a bit ugly and exaggerated. As an envoy from the Eastern Roman Empire to the Huns, he had the opportunity to meet Attila in his "Fragmentary History of the Huns": "He was short in stature, with a broad chest, a big head, and small eyes. , exudes gray. His nose is flat and his face is dark. "This is a typical Asian appearance. The Roman historian Amyanas has this wonderful description in "History": "The Huns are much more barbaric than all the barbarians in Europe. They are born ugly, with stubby limbs, strong torsos, big heads, and bow-legged legs. The lines of their entire bodies are as if God had casually cut them out of an old tree root with an axe. They ate half-cooked animal meat, or grass roots dug out of the ground, and never used seasonings; they wore rough linen clothes, or rat skin robes, and once put on them, they would never wash or change them until they were in tatters. They grow on horseback and can stay on horseback for days and nights. When fighting, they rarely formed a neat formation. Sometimes they dispersed, sometimes gathered, coming and going like the wind. They often rushed in front of the enemy when they were unprepared, and then left quickly after killing and looting. "The famous French sinologist Dai Suiliang described the Huns as follows: "Short and stout, with round and huge heads, wide faces, high cheekbones, flat noses, thick beards, and one earring. Except for a bunch of hair on the top of the head, the rest of the hair is shaved. The eyebrows are very thick, the eyes are like prominent almonds, and the pupils are lively. "This record is similar to the image of "horses trampling on the Huns." Through these two records of foreigners, we can judge that although the Huns have entered Europe for many years, they still maintain the characteristics of the yellow race.
