Main experience
Work "Everyday Upward"
Sun Yumin loved painting since she was a child. After graduating from junior high school, she joined the propaganda group and began to paint portraits of Chairman Mao.
In 1970, she entered the Cultural Center because of her expertise in painting. While completing promotional painting tasks, she became a teacher. While tutoring students, she also tried various painting techniques.
In 1977, Sun Yumin was successfully admitted to Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. Four years of hard study gave her solid basic skills, and her unyielding personality made her choose gongbi painting, which was not popular at the time. For her graduation creation, she gave up her winter vacation and went to remote rural areas to experience life. She captured every detail from life and established the theme of "Everyday Upward" as a rural primary school creation. In order to properly handle the "blackboard" on the picture, she tried to use lines, pens, and ink, and at the same time, she used the wood grain of the blackboard as the key object of depiction. She first placed a block of wood with bright wood grains under silk and rubbed it with white wax. Then she used ink to find the lines. The image of a whitish blackboard appeared where the white wax left. She also applied oil pastels to her paintings, bringing to life many real details such as the old and stained blackboards in rural primary schools, which greatly enhanced her artistic appeal and found her own artistic language. "Tian Tian Shang Shang" became the graduation creation of the 77th class of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts that attracted much attention, and Sun Yumin also established his own artistic style of meticulous and light colors.
Work "Seeking"
After graduating from university, Sun Yumin was assigned to the Liaoning Provincial Painting Academy to engage in professional painting creation. In 1982, Sun Yumin went to Beijing to participate in the figure painting creation research class of the Chinese Painting Research Institute of the Ministry of Culture. Here, she was able to listen to the teachings of many masters. Pan Zizi's high hopes for the revitalization of Chinese meticulous painting had a profound impact on her. Sun Yumin, who looks calm on the outside but is stubborn on the inside, devotes herself wholeheartedly to artistic creation with the spirit of hard work and hard work. "Quiet Birch Forest" won the Outstanding Work Award at the 60th Anniversary Art Exhibition of the Founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and was also praised by Panzi.
Sun Yumin’s writings are full of good wishes for life and the world. She favors creative themes that are positive, noble, and righteous, and uses poetic descriptions to express her inner yearning for truth, goodness, and beauty. In 1985, inspired by the spirit of the women's volleyball girls, Sun Yumin created a painting called "Seeking", which uses the moment of a women's volleyball player holding the ball in both hands and lowering her head in meditation to express the spiritual world of exploration, thinking and pursuit of the Chinese women's volleyball players. The composition of the picture is concise and concise, and the inner world of the characters is vividly and vividly expressed with highly summarized and refined line shapes. This work won the first prize in the painting category of the "International Olympic Sports and Art Competition" and was the first time a Chinese painter won a gold medal in this competition. Sun Yumin thus boarded the International Olympic Conference Center in Barcelona, ??Spain, and accepted the award certificate signed and issued by IOC President Jacques Rogge.
The work "Three Women"
While Sun Yumin was widely praised for her elegant, fresh, poetic and romantic artistic style, she felt strong dissatisfaction deep in her heart . She worries that her paintings are too beautiful and too familiar, and her skills and style will gradually fall into a fixed format, and she will lose the ability to innovate in art. In 1989, Sun Yumin, whose child was only 4 years old, entered the advanced training class of the Chinese Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and began the creation and research of portraits. In 1990, she entered the Central Academy of Fine Arts again and participated in the training class of Professor Kayama Matazo of Tokyo University of the Arts in Japan. Her vision was further broadened and she paid attention to the issues of modeling and structure. She draws nourishment from the creations of Paul Cézanne and Modigliani, and also learns from classical Chinese modeling methods. She has not given up on absorbing useful nourishment from folk art. In 1991, she applied her simplified and deformed brushwork to well-known characters and created the work "Three Women" depicting the images of Qiu Jin, Zhao Yiman and Song Qingling. The work participated in the first Chinese Painting Exhibition; in 1994, Her "Qing Tea" vividly depicts the inner temperament of three female painters and won the outstanding work of the 8th National Art Exhibition; in 1996, she used one of her friends as a model to create "Zhuoru", which subtly revealed the characters His inner psychological activities are vivid and vivid, and his works participated in the invitational exhibition of Chinese female painters.
In 2001, Sun Yumin was transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University to teach. She devotes all her time and energy to teaching and devotes herself to cultivating talents.
In 2006, her "Smoke and Cloud" participated in the Beijing International Biennale. In 2007, she created the Olympic-themed "Ball" based on a badminton player, focusing on depicting the colors of China and China. Spirit. Now, Sun Yumin, who has reached the age of destiny, has extended his creative tentacles to the people and things around him. For her, the materials are all around her and there is no need to look far away. Techniques, shapes, and colors all take a back seat at this time. She uses techniques fluently without revealing any traces, focusing all her attention on portraying the inner world of the characters. She still brings poetry and ideals to explore and enhance the beauty that originally exists in daily life.
Female Consciousness
As a wife, mother and artist, Sun Yumin often embodies a strong female consciousness. This is not only reflected in the series of themes she has chosen, but also in the themes she strives to express - self-esteem, self-love, self-improvement, self-reliance, as well as the tolerance, understanding and sacrifice of maternal love. The female perspective makes her creations more delicate and pays more attention to details. This kind of spiritual connotation makes Sun Yumin even seem a bit "out of touch" in today's society. However, she sticks to her ideals and beliefs with resilience, and practices her artistic pursuits in her job at school and in the artist's studio. Sun Yumin is far away from the business trend and hustle and bustle. She almost never sells paintings, and most of the works in the exhibition are in her own hands. She said with a smile that these works are like her own sons, "I would really hate to exchange my sons for money!" And whether she is participating in exhibitions or donating works, she puts her best effort into creating every painting. She cherishes her works like a bird cherishes its feathers, because she regards artistic pursuit as her ultimate life goal, and money is only a means to achieve this process. Because of this, she strives to be "calm-minded" and indifferent to her aspirations. For her, the process of artistic pursuit itself is happiness.
Artistic style
Characteristics of works
Sun Yumin’s meticulous figure paintings are characterized by their profound spiritual connotations, workmanlike writing, elegant colors and simple brushwork. The profound meaning, strong lines, deformation and divine transmission highlight the aesthetic orientation of Chinese painting that emphasizes interest and simplicity, as well as her thoughtfulness and maturity in the pursuit of high style. The meticulous figure paintings created by Sun Yumin have a high academic level and artistic quality, and have a distinctive national spirit and oriental art charm. Sun Yumin once said: "The simplest is the most impactful."
Good at
Sun Yumin is not only good at character themes and deeply depicting the spiritual world of characters, but also artistically. She deliberately pursues the tendency of elegant colors, simple shapes and prominent line awareness, and has been walking along this path to form her unique style and temperament. For many years, there has been a tendency in the field of fine brushwork and heavy color painting, that is, it is believed that fine brushwork means the pursuit of intricate and delicate painting methods, while heavy color means rich decoration, bright reds and greens. The result is that the more workmanship becomes, the more vulgar and low-style it is. In view of this, Sun Yumin's paintings and her choices are indeed well-intentioned and original, and the results are obvious. Just as Zhang Yanyuan commented on Wu Daozi, "Everyone is close to each other, but I am separated from the dots and lines." Wu Daozi created the "sparse style" style, which is his brilliance.
Spiritual interest
Sun Yumin's portrait art is commendable for its creativity in inheriting tradition and reflecting modern spiritual interest. The art of portraiture has a rich and valuable tradition in both Chinese and Western paintings. In the West, portrait art has a lofty status because it pursues the depiction of cool figures and mental conditions, which is very difficult. Chinese portraits have always paid attention to expressiveness, and they have accumulated a lot of experience since Gu Kaizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The modern painter Ren Bonian is a talented portrait painter. Sun Yumin is a painter trained by the modern art education system. After rigorous training, she has both Chinese and Western techniques, and has very solid realistic modeling skills. But what makes her outstanding is her courage to surpass, seize the characteristics, and directly draw the spiritual likeness. For example, her painting "Mr. Panzi" is a successful example of vivid portrayal and both form and spirit.
