Names of the sections of the Grand Canal in Sui Dynasty

The Grand Canal in Sui Dynasty consists of the following four parts:

Tongji canal 1 (side canal)

As early as the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, a gap has been dug, also known as Dangdang Canal (that is, wandering canal), also known as side canal. During the Han and Wei Dynasties, the Yangqu Canal was excavated, dredged and renovated.

2. Han Gou (Du)

During the Spring and Autumn Period, King Fu Cha of Wu ordered the construction of a canal connecting the Yangtze River and Huaihe River. Because it passes through Hancheng, it is named "Hangou".

3. Yongji Canal

In the fourth year of the Great Cause (608), Yang Di wrote to more than one million men and women in Hebei counties to open the Yongji Canal, leading to Qinshui, Linjiang in the south and Zhuo Jun in the north. Yongji Canal was also dredged from canal channels and natural waterways left over from previous dynasties.

4. Jiangnan Canal

The excavation history of Jiangnan Canal can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period. Today, the State of Wu opened a canal from Jiangsu to the Yangtze River, starting from the north gate of Suzhou, passing through Caohu Lake in the northwest, passing through Taipusi Lake and Jiangnan Canal, passing through Yanghu Lake in the north, entering the ancient Furong Lake, and then entering the Yangtze River from Ligang to Yangzhou. The Qin Dynasty dug Dantu Canal and a canal from Zhenjiang to Danyang.

strong function

The main function of the Grand Canal in Sui and Tang Dynasties is water transportation. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties, national granaries were located in Luoyang, Jiangnan and other places, carrying a large amount of grain. All day, the canal is "thousands of miles away".

By the time Wu Zetian proclaimed himself emperor, the area around the northern city of Luoyang was already "a collection of boats and boats in the world, with more than 10,000 ships", and the river was so congested that even the queen could not sit still. In 70 1 year, Wu Zetian ordered that "the canal be diverted and a new pond be opened for chartering by various states".
