What are the characteristics of annotation classics in Song Dynasty?
The number of annotation classics in Song Dynasty increased rapidly. In the Southern Song Dynasty, a number of important classics annotated by scholars since the Han Dynasty were published in the form of annotations to the Thirteen Classics, which was very popular in feudal times. In this set of annotations, except for Xiao Jing, which was annotated by Tang Gaozong, Han people and Wei and Jin people were equally divided, and the annotation was completed by Tang and Song people. Generally speaking, sinology, which values Han over Tang, tends to revile famous things, which is quite different from the way Confucian scholars annotated classics in Neo-Confucianism at that time. Although the classic works of Confucian scholars in the Song Dynasty are rarely included in the Notes to Thirteen Classics, many of its achievements have been recognized by scholars in past dynasties. For example, in the annotation of the Book of Changes, both Cheng Yi's and Zhu's The Original Meaning of the Book of Changes are innovative, especially Cheng Yi's, which is highly praised by Gu, a master of park studies in the Qing Dynasty. In the annotation of Shangshu, Cai Shen's Biography of Collected Books and Jin Luxiang's Annotation of Shangshu are no less than the Biography of Justice by pseudo-Confucius and Confucius, and later scholars use it more. The annotation of "Poetry" is Ouyang Xiu's Original Meaning of Mao Poetry, which can often explore the poet's intention. With regard to the three rites, Zhu's Interpretation of the Book of Rites in his later years is clear-cut, and annotated with the contents of the Book of Rites, tracing back to the source. Zhu's Collection of Interpretation of the Analects of Confucius and Mencius is concise and easy to understand for beginners, and can be read together with his Collection of Interpretation of the Analects of Confucius and Mencius' Chapters and Sentences. Although there were a large number of classics in Ming Dynasty, it failed to make a breakthrough by inheriting Song studies.
