The Mei Duo Ashun troupe performed the play on September 1, 1917, in the Shanghai Jinghua Theater. During the Shaoxing Literary Opera and New Yue Opera periods, the play was performed by both male and female troupes. In September 1953, "The Legend of Pipa" adapted from Gao Zecheng's original work was performed at the Jindu Theater with the Yue Opera Troupe.
Adapted by Sun Xu, directed by Jin Feng, arranged by Liu Ruzeng, and technical director Wang Chuanqian. Qi Yaxian plays Zhao Wuniang, Bi Chunfang plays Cai Bojie, Chen Jinlian plays Zhang Guangcai, and Wei Lanfang plays Cai's mother. In 1956, the cooperative Yue Opera Troupe brought the play to Beijing for a performance. Premier Zhou Enlai went to the People's Theater to watch it and went backstage to meet with all the cast and crew during the intermission.
