Why do couplets use red paper?

Red paper (Spring Festival couplets) means celebration. The legend is to exorcise the monster named Nian. Nian is a man-eating monster in ancient legends. It is said that Nian is afraid of being red. So every Chinese New Year, every household sticks red paper at the door. Red paper later evolved into Spring Festival couplets, which played an exorcism role.
