Lu Xun's advice to children

Read less China's books and do more good deeds-192610 June 14 Lu Xun's speech at the weekly meeting of Xiamen University.

Today, the topic of my speech is: "Read less China and be a good person." I came to our school to do research at the National China Research Institute and give a lecture on the history of China literature. Theoretically, we should persuade everyone to bury themselves in reading ancient books and read more books by China. But when I was in Beijing, I saw someone advocating reading classics and advocating retro. After coming here, I saw some people clinging to the viewpoint of China's ancient literature. This reminds me that reading less China is better than reading more China.

Respecting Confucius, worshiping Confucianism, reading classics and restoring ancient ways can save China. This tone has been getting higher and higher recently. In fact, most people who advocated reading classics in the past had ulterior motives. They want people to learn the Bible, to be dutiful sons and obedient subjects, to be heroic women and virtuous women, and at the same time, they can be proud of themselves. They often boast that they read classics and boast about the ancient culture of China. However, have they ever used The Analects of Confucius to influence the Japanese soldiers who caused the May 30th tragedy, or used the Book of Changes to curse the sinking and shelling of the Eight-Nation Alliance warship at Dagukou on the eve of the March 8th tragedy?

Most of you young students are patriotic and want to save the country. But in order to save China today, I don't want to read more China. On the contrary, I think it's better to study less for the time being. Read less China's books. The articles are almost the same. It's no big deal. There are at least three disadvantages in reading China's books: first, the more you read China's books, the more depressed you become; Second, the more China books you read, the more you want to take a smooth road and refuse to take risks; Third, the more I read China's books, the more confused my mind becomes, and I can't tell right from wrong. It is for this reason that I pointed to killing the game under the window and advised people not to read more China's books.

Most of you young students are eager to learn. It is good to study hard, but don't "read dead books" and use them flexibly. Don't "study hard" but also care about social affairs; Don't "study to death", but also pay attention to health. There are good books and bad books; Some can be trusted, some can't be trusted. The ancients said, "It is better to believe in books than to have no books." That is the reliability from ancient historical facts. What I said can be believed, but what I can't believe is based on the ideological nature of ancient books. You can read less China's ancient books for a while. If you want to read them, don't forget: distinguish, criticize, discard the dross and take the essence.

Secondly, I want to advise you to "do good deeds". People all over the world are often dissatisfied with people who do good deeds. They think that the word "good thing" seems to mean "something happens when something happens", but it is not. I think there are more such "good people" in China now. Because all things in society need good people, and then they can innovate and develop day by day. Look at Columbus's exploration of the new world, Nansheng's exploration of the North Pole, and various new inventions of scientists. Which of their achievements did not come from good things? That is our deserted school, and it is actually a good thing to build a school building to recruit students. So I think "good people" really don't matter.

I have seen that there are often people exercising on the playground of our school; The Chinese reading room of the library is often crowded with people reading newspapers and books. This is certainly a good phenomenon. The newspapers and magazines in the western language reading room are rarely read, as if they were insignificant. This is ignorance of beautiful things, and it is also the reason why this phenomenon exists. I don't know western newspapers and magazines, although it doesn't matter much, but even reading after class can really increase a lot of common sense. So I very much hope that you, for the sake of all science, will always pay attention. People who study A can also learn a little B, but naturally it does not hinder normal classes. Only in this way can we know a little about everything and do things better in society after graduation.

But everyone's mental state is different, and I dare not suggest that everyone be a good person. If it's just a small good thing, you might as well try it. For example, for everything that can be satisfied, just make a slight correction. But even such a small matter can't be paid attention to often. In case we can't do it, don't laugh at "good deeds", especially failed "good deeds", let alone laugh at and despise them!
