Yu Teng’s biographical information

When he was young, his family was poor and he tended pigs to others. Whenever I go to the village school, I always like to listen to the teacher's lectures outside the window. Over time, I can recite it. The school teacher Dong Jizhi always cherished talents. Seeing that Yu Teng was smart and eager to learn, he allowed him to study for free and often provided financial aid. From then on, he studied hard, passed the imperial examinations, and became a Jinshi. He successively served as magistrate of Yibin and Tongliang counties in Sichuan, and acted as magistrate of Chengdu. In his spare time from political affairs, he liked to appraise and collect cultural relics. Most of his official money earned was to purchase calligraphy and paintings, and he studied and explained each piece in detail. The Song paintings and calligraphy albums in the collection are the most precious, such as "Peach Blossoms", Ma Yuan's "Plum Blossoms on a Rock", "Begonias and Butterflies", "White Roses", Lin Chun's "Plum Blossoms, Bamboos and Cold Birds", Zhao Ji's "Wanmei" "Double Bird Picture" and so on. These famous paintings are now collected in several major museums across the country, and are included in the "Album of Paintings of Song Dynasties" or "Album of Famous Paintings of the Song Dynasty". In addition to collecting and appraising ancient picture albums, he also likes to compile and print ancient books. While in Chengdu, he personally presided over the engraving of "Selected Works of the Prosperous Song Dynasty".

When he was appointed magistrate of Tongliang County, Sichuan, his wife Meng passed away and he married Wang as his successor. In 1890, Yu Teng died of illness in Chengdu. Wang carried his coffin back to his hometown for burial, and also transported back Yu Teng's precious collection and the woodblock prints of "Selected Works of the High Song Dynasty". After that, he settled in Lanshan (now Linyi City). Wu Xun in Shitang City established a volunteer school, which was commended by the Qing court, and was also established in many places in Shandong.

Mrs. Wang thought that her husband had difficulty studying when he was young, so he admired the idea of ??setting up a charity school. So he donated a pair of gold bracelets and a hundred acres of land to set up a charity school at Langya Academy in Linyi City. This matter was reported to the court by local officials, and Empress Dowager Cixi issued an edict to give her a golden phoenix crown and title her "First-Class Madam." Yang Shixiang, the governor of Shandong Province, presented him with a plaque and personally wrote the four words "Remove the ring and start a school" to express his praise. For a time, Wang's deeds were widely circulated, and she was known as "Female Martial Arts".

In his spare time from government affairs, he likes to appreciate and collect cultural relics. Most of the income he earns is to buy calligraphy, paintings and ancient books, and conduct detailed research and interpretation. He collected many ancient paintings from the previous dynasties throughout his life. The existing albums of paintings from the Song Dynasty such as "Picture of Peach Blossoms", "Picture of Begonias and Butterflies", "Picture of Two Birds with Winter Plum Blossoms", "Inscription on Yanshan Mountain", etc. have been passed down to this day after his collection. Among them, Mi Fu's "Yanshan Inscription" was collected by the Right Prime Minister Jia Sidao during the Lizong period of the Southern Song Dynasty. It was acquired by Ke Jiusi, a calligraphy and painting collector in the Yuan Dynasty. It fell into his hands again during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty. In modern times, it was exiled in Japan and was later purchased by patriotic overseas Chinese. country. He also compiled and printed ancient books.
