How long is the wall of Datong?
East-west length 1.8km, and north-south length 1.82km. According to China Daily, Datong City Wall is located in the ancient city of Datong. It was built by Xu Da, a general of the Ming Dynasty, on the basis of the capital city of the Northern Wei Dynasty and the old earthen city of Liao, Jin and Yuan in the Ming Dynasty. The outline of the city is slightly square, with the east-west length of 1.8km, the north-south length of 1.82km and the circumference of 7.24km.. The Great Wall includes four main doors, the East Gate, the Yang Gate and the South Gate Yongtai. In 2008, after a comprehensive archaeological investigation, the rammed earth wall with good preservation accounted for about one-third of the total length of the main wall of the ancient city, and the ordinary wall with good preservation accounted for about one-third of the total length. Some walls still have brick and stone foundations.
