The Origin of Paifang Street in Xinxiang City

Stone archway and Zhao Keqi's cohabitation workshop, a historical relic that has experienced 180 years of wind and rain, stand alone in the crowded traffic on archway street. Zhao, an old man of Zhao family, said that Zhao family is inextricably linked with Paifang Street and Yinmakou, but few people know this story now, even the records in the archives are few.

Speaking of the origin of Yinmakou, according to Zhao's genealogy, Zhao Jiazu first came to Zhaozhuang (now Yinmakou) from Hongdong County, Shanxi Province in the Ming Dynasty. At that time, Zhaozhuang was deserted, and the Weihe River bypassed the north of Zhaozhuang. At that time, there were many families raising horses in Xinxiang county, and they needed to find a place to drink horses. There is a shortcut to Weihe River to drink horses. However, because Guo Shangshu lived in the north street of the county, Du Liangtang lived in the west street, and Xu Sanben, who always complained in the court, lived in the east street. The horses of ordinary people dared not pass through these places, so they had to leave the south gate of the county and turn north along the present Jinsui Avenue to the sports center and then to Zhao Zhuangwei.

At that time, Yinmakou only included the area east of China Bank on Pingyuan Road, north of Paifang Street and south of Weihe River. After liberation, at the intersection of Pingyuan Road and Heping Avenue, a Xinhua Bookstore opened southward to the west road, called Yinmakou Xinhua Bookstore, and the bus stop was called Yinmakou Station. Now the geographical scope of Yinmakou has expanded a lot, including the area east of Heping Avenue, north of Jinsui Avenue and west of People's Shengli Canal.

The Zhao family lived in Yinmakou for many years. In the 10 generation in Zhao Ke, they met Wang Tailai, a Shanxi merchant. With the help of Wang Tailai, Zhao Ke started an ironware business. A few years later, he gradually became the richest man in the area. "It governs thousands of hectares of land and has 200 owners." Zhao Ke is generous and charitable, deeply loved by the villagers and regarded as an enlightened person in the local area. During the rebellion of Anbailism in Qing Dynasty, it is said that the Zhao Ke family recruited 100 able-bodied men and deliberately rebelled. After the emperor sent someone to investigate, 100 able-bodied men turned out to be Zhao's gatekeepers, and learned that Zhao's seven generations had not separated and their families were harmonious. Not only did they not investigate, but they also allowed the Zhao family to build a seven-generation cohabitation square (stone archway) to show off their descendants.

Today's Paifang Street has no name. After the stone archway was completed, it was named Paifang Street.
