What is the history of mulberry cultivation in China?

Mulberry cultivation in China has a history of more than 7000 years. By the Zhou Dynasty, mulberry planting and sericulture had flourished in the north and south of China, and sericulture and silk weaving were considered as sideline jobs that women had to take part in.

There are many chapters describing sericulture in The Book of Songs, and some poems vividly describe the busy labor scene of women picking mulberry and sericulture at that time.

"Qi Feng July" wrote: Spring is beautiful, birds are singing and flowers are fragrant. The woman followed with a basket, begging for soft mulberry.

In spring, the sun is shining and the orioles are singing. Women walked along the path with laundry baskets, picking young mulberry for silkworms.

In Shang Dynasty, the words "mulberry, silkworm, silk and silk" appeared in Oracle Bone Inscriptions. By the Zhou Dynasty, mulberry picking and sericulture had become an ordinary farm work.

During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, mulberry trees were planted in pieces. The working people in our country have improved mulberry trees and cultivated many varieties with high yield and high quality.

There are two kinds of mulberry depicted in the "mulberry picking map" on the bronze wares of the Warring States period. Low mulberry trees may be called "mulberry" by later generations.

As for mulberries, ancient books say: Mulberries and millet are planted together in the first year, and when the mulberry tree grows as high as the mature millet, it is cut off on the ground, and new branches will grow at the roots in the second year. This kind of mulberry is not only convenient for picking and management, but also has high yield of young leaf fertilizer.

The emergence of mulberry is also a great progress in the development of sericulture production.
