Magnetism is a physical phenomenon in which substances attract or repel each other. Common magnetic substances are iron and magnets, as well as certain types of steel. Although ordinary substances are not magnetic, substances in a magnetic field will still be affected by a slight magnetic force, which may even require special instruments to measure it.
Magnetic force is the basic force generated by the movement of electric charges. Maxwell's equations describe the origin of this force and the laws of its behavior (see also Biot-Savart Law). Magnetism is generated when electric charges or charged objects are in motion. For example, "electromagnetic induction" is a phenomenon that occurs when electrons move in a circuit; and "permanent magnet" is a phenomenon caused by the fixed spin motion of subatoms in electrons.
