Why is Clouds in Beijing written in English?

1938 In the spring, Lin Yutang suddenly thought of translating A Dream of Red Mansions. Later, he felt that the background of the times was too far away for westerners to understand, so he decided to copy A Dream of Red Mansions on this basis.

The dedication before "Clouds in Beijing" is: Write all the tears and dedicate them to the Japanese invaders. Not a hero's blood, but a free man in China. When Lin Yutang wrote Clouds in Beijing, it coincided with the outbreak of World War II, when Japan launched a full-scale war of aggression against China, and children of all ethnic groups in China struggled to resist Japan.

Lin Yutang deeply loves the great motherland. Every man is responsible for the rise and fall of the world. He believes that as an intellectual who keeps pace with the times in China, he should be duty-bound to bind his own security with the national security at a critical juncture and should be duty-bound to join the camp of saving the country.
