Etymological evolution: " "Xun" is a knowing character, which first appeared in the bronze inscriptions of the Western Zhou Dynasty (Figure 1). The lower part of the character in the Western Zhou Dynasty is "fire", and the upper part is shaped like a window. It means fire coming out of the window. Compared with the characters of the Warring States Period (Figure 2) compared with the characters of the Western Zhou Dynasty, the lower part seems to have become "black" characters. It means it will be blackened. The Xiaozhuan script of "Shuowen" inherits the script of the Warring States Period. In Han Dynasty characters, the two sides of "屮" in the upper part of Xiaozhuan characters were transformed into a horizontal line to form a glyph.
Modern writing adds an extra stroke to the top and turns it into "Xun". "Xun" comes from "屮" and "黑". "Shuowen" says, "Xun is the smoke coming out of the fire, from the ground, from the black, the ground is black, and it is blackened." The original meaning of smoke refers to the smoke coming out of fire. Later it was extended to refer to smoking with fire. Smoking can cause flames, so the meaning of burning is also extended later. Later, it was also extended to refer to odor infiltration and invasion.
