Site layout of the ancient city of Qi in Linzi

The ancient city of Qi includes two parts: a big city and a small town. The small town is in the southwest of the big city, and the two cities are connected. The big city is 4.5 kilometers from north to south and 3.5 kilometers from east to west. It is Guo Cheng where officials, civilians and businessmen live. The small town, 2 kilometers north and south and 1.5 kilometers east and west, is Miyagi, where the monarch lives. The two cities cover an area of 15.5 square kilometers.

The ruins of the old city wall are still there, and the traces of rammed buildings are discernible. There are thirteen gates. The roads in the city are vertical and horizontal, and most of them are connected with the city gate. Ten main traffic arteries have been identified, including three in small towns and seven in big cities. Roadside residential and workshop sites are everywhere. More than a dozen cultural relics such as Martyr's Horse Pit in the Tomb of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, Drainage Crossing in the Ancient City of Qi, Wenshao Place of Confucius, and Huangongtai have been opened to tourists.

qicheng consists of two cities, big and small. The big city is Guo Cheng, with a rectangular plane, with the longest point of 4.5 kilometers from north to south, the widest point of nearly 4 kilometers from east to west and the circumference of more than 14 kilometers. The east wall is built by the river, which is tortuous. The city wall was rammed with plywood, which was built and repaired many times from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty to the Han Dynasty. The base width was 2 ~ 3 meters and the maximum width was 43 meters. The highest place on the ground is more than 5 meters. In the early stage, the rammed layer is thin, with many small pestles, and in the later stage, the rammed layer is thick and flat. Six city gates have been leaned out, one in the east and one in the west, and two in the north and south. The doorway is generally about 1 meters wide. Seven main roads have been explored in the city, most of which are connected with the city gates, and some run through the city with a road width of more than 6 meters, of which two north-south main roads are as wide as 2 meters. These roads cross each other and divide the city into several blocks. The small town is Miyagi, which is located in the southwest of the big city and embedded in the northeast. It is 2.5 kilometers long from north to south, 1.5 kilometers wide from east to west and more than 7 kilometers in circumference. The base of the city wall is 2 ~ 3 meters wide, and the widest point is more than 6 meters. There are five gates, one in the east, one in the west and one in the north, and two in the south. The east and north gates lead to the big city, and the walls on both sides of the doorway are protruding outward. The three main roads are connected with the south gate, the west gate and the north gate respectively, and the road width is 8-17 meters. There is also a "ring coating" about 6 meters wide along the inner side of the city wall. There are drainage channels in the city. There is a north-south main canal in the west of the big city, which is connected with the moat in the northeast corner of the small town in the south, and divided into two branches in the north, one of which flows into the north moat and the other is injected into the west wall in the northwest. There are also canals in the northeast that are injected into the North Moat and Zi River respectively. There is a curved-ruler-shaped canal in the small town, which is injected into the water system through the palace area and the west wall. There are natural stone drainage crossings at the city walls, and the excavated drainage crossing at the western wall is 16.7 meters long from east to west, about 7-8 meters wide and about 3 meters high. There are 3 layers of running water holes, 5 holes in each layer, and the holes in each layer are staggered. Water holes are generally 5 cm high and 4 cm wide. The drainage crossing and the two walls of the east-west inlet and outlet waterways are built with stones, and the bottom is paved with stones.
