1. Historical reasons:
Buddhism was introduced into China from the Han Dynasty, although it is not as long as Taoism, but it is still an ancient qualification.
2. Political reasons:
In addition to Confucianism, Buddhism is more suitable for those in power to control the people, and Buddhism attaches importance to people's spiritual and moral progress and consciousness. The purpose of practicing Buddhism is to discover the truth of life and the universe according to Siddhartha's practice method, and finally transcend life and death and suffering, cut off all troubles and get relief. The first principle of Taoism: "Taoism is natural." Go with nature, don't be too deliberate, "go to what, go to luxury, go to Thailand." People should treat nature, others and themselves with a natural attitude (three levels). So there is "nature-liberation-of course-happiness", and there are fewer words about how to be a good person and do less evil.
3. People's ideas:
Many people feel that the world is painful and expect to make their next life better by doing something. Just like Buddhism has this view, Taoism does not, so people tend to believe in Buddhism rather than Taoism.
4. Literally:
As a well-known novel like The Journey to the West, this book is full of the color of worshipping Buddhism and suppressing Taoism. It is an allusion to the authorities and current events, but the people don't know, only to see his wonderful writing. They worship Guanyin bodhisattva, Tang Xuanzang and black grass, and laugh at the jade emperor and the old gentleman. People don't understand Taoist teachings, so they know one thing from here.
Personal opinion: I have some contact with both sects. I think Buddhism is easier to understand, more intimate and more profound than Taoism. What's more, I found that there are not only Western Buddhists but also Jade Emperor in many Buddhist temples. Combining Chinese and western cultures, Taoism is a Taoist figure like Sanqing.
