The role of collection identification
Collection identification should learn from the experience of cultural relics identification in past dynasties, make full use of the knowledge and achievements of all aspects of society, and conduct in-depth research on the collection by consulting historical documents, atlases, newspapers and periodicals. The early discussion on this aspect is found in various ancient books, such as Guoyu, Lu Chunqiu, Historical Records, Hanshu and so on. By the Song Dynasty, there had been monographs on cultural relics appraisal, such as Archaeological Map by Lu Dalin, Notes on Ding Yi Wares in Past Dynasties by Jiang Shanggong, Records of Historical Records by Ouyang Xiu, and Records of Stone Inscriptions by Zhao Mingcheng. Since the Song Dynasty, there have been more and more monographs and comprehensive catalogues of various cultural relics, such as On Gegu Yao by Cao Zhao in Ming Dynasty, Xiqing Ancient Mirror and Ningshou Ancient Mirror by Liang in Qing Dynasty, Jin Bian by Wang Chang, A Tour of Historic Sites by Xing Shu, and Jinshisuo by Feng He Feng, etc. The monographs on modern cultural relics research and archaeology mainly include Ye's Yu Shi, Luo Zhenyu's Book Deed of Yin Ruins and Three Generations of Ji Jin Literature. These works and catalogues are essential reference materials for collection identification.
