abstract

Paul and his girlfriend Barbara are celebrating the new Internet company with wealthy businessman Howard and his wife Vicky. Four people celebrate on Howard's yacht. When they were in high spirits, Howard's yacht didn't hit the rocks much, and Vicky was trapped inside. Paul and Barbara had to go to a nearby fishing village for help.

Imboca, a seemingly isolated town, residents secretly observed the purpose of these two strangers. Paul and Barbara finally persuaded two fishermen to help the stranded yacht, only to find that Howard and Vicky had disappeared. At this time, Barbara was caught by the hotel counter staff. As night fell, Paul found himself being chased by the whole town.

Paul discovered the big secret of Imboca when he was running for his life. They made a pilgrimage to Dagon, old gods. All non-Imboca townspeople should be sacrificed to different demons, men should be skinned, and women should be married to Dagon, so as to breed half-human, half-demon offspring.

Film evaluation:

This is a Cthulhu-style film. We can clearly see the traces of the novel The Haze of Innsmouth, and there is no doubt that the script is adapted from this novel. But the Cthulhu-style horror is obviously not reflected in this film. The horror in Cthulhu mythology lies in "atmosphere", and the existence of "former dominator" and other horrors is often not revealed.

Instead, I highlight my horror through some hints or traces left behind, such as deformed human believers (deep divers in this film), weird statues, terrible legends and so on. After all, the imagination of the audience is the scariest place. Therefore, as a film dedicated to expressing "Romanesque horror", its shooting technique is too "straightforward".

The atmosphere of terror is far from enough. Only a few clips, such as "The Man's Dream" and "Strange Hotel", are a bit "weird". Most of them put horrible things directly in front of you, and even added skinned B-movies, which failed to capture the "infiltration" feeling of fear.

Finally, Big boss really appeared. Isn't this a big octopus? This makes the mystery disappear completely, the special effects are rough, and the previous bedding becomes meaningless. However, as a traditional horror film, it is too wordy. Octopus girl, blood sacrifice, skinning and so on are all curious.

But there is still a big gap between films with similar themes, or the "intensity" of fear is too low. Only the heroine's pale face in the whole film is scary and can't meet the requirements of qualified American horror films.
