Where does Jiaodong mean?

Jiaodong area refers to Jiaolai Valley and the peninsula area with the same language, culture and customs to its east. According to pronunciation, culture and customs, it is subdivided into hilly areas of Yantai and Weihai, and plain areas on both sides of Jiaolai River, such as Weifang City.

Jiaodong is surrounded by the sea on three sides, the inland of Shandong in the west, South Korea and Japan across the Yellow Sea, and the Bohai Strait in the north. There are many excellent ports in Jiaodong area. The winding coastline is the birthplace of marine culture, which is different from farming culture. It is also an important part of the coastal areas of China, an important industrial, agricultural and service base, and one of the regions with relatively developed economy and high degree of modernization.

In ancient times, Jiaodong area was the settlement of Lion and Guyi, the Dongyi nationality. Its name originated from Jiaodong County where jimo city (now pingdu city) was located in Qin Dynasty. After Qin and Han Dynasties, its name faded out of history. The name Jiaodong was not heard again until the government of the Republic of China established Jiaodong Road and our party established Jiaodong Revolutionary Base in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Jiaodong is famous for Laiyang pear, Yantai apple and Jiaodong steamed bread.
