What are the "Book of Songs" and "Chu Ci" collectively called?

Fengshao is a combination of "Book of Songs" and "Chu Ci".

The Book of Songs is my country's first collection of poems and created the realist tradition of Chinese poetry. "Li Sao" created the romantic tradition of Chinese poetry.

1. "The Book of Songs"

The "Book of Songs" is the earliest collection of poems in the history of Chinese Han literature. It is also called "The Book of Songs" and "Three Hundred Poems". It collects It contains 305 poems written over about 500 years from the early Western Zhou Dynasty to the Spring and Autumn Period.

The content is divided into three parts: Feng, Ya, and Song. Among them, "Feng" refers to local folk songs, including 15 national styles, totaling 160 songs; "Ya" mainly refers to court songs, It is divided into Daya and Xiaoya, with a total of 105 chapters; "Ode" is mainly ancestral temple music, with 40 songs.

2. "Chu Ci"

Chu Ci is a literary style created by Qu Yuan during the Warring States Period, and there are other representatives such as Song Yu. "Chu Ci" is my country's first collection of romantic poetry, including Qu Yuan's famous "Li Sao", which is the longest political lyric poem in the history of ancient Chinese poetry.

Extended information

Compared with the simple four-character poems in the Book of Songs, the sentence patterns of Chuci are more lively, with many five-character and seven-character sentences, and more three-character poems. The rhythm of a meal contains the important genes of the later "two, three" sentence pattern of five-character poems and the "two, two, three" sentence pattern of seven-character poems.

In the middle or at the end of a sentence, the word "xi" is often used in Chu Ci to help adjust the syllables and rhythm, soothe the tone, or function as a structural particle. The long tone of the word "xi" in singing more clearly demonstrates the musical characteristics of Chu. New poetry forms play an important role in shaping complex artistic images and expressing deeper and more intense emotions.

From a musical point of view, because Chu music has a relatively strong regional character, there have been many musical scores singing the Book of Songs in history, but music scores singing the Songs of Chu are rare.

The guqin music "Li Sao" that has been passed down from the Tang Dynasty to today is a guqin music composed by Chen Kangshi in the late Tang Dynasty based on Qu Yuan's poem of the same name. It was originally composed of 9 beats, and later evolved into 11 beats and 18 beats. This kind of poem expresses the poet's depression and concern for the country and the people when he wanted to implement political reform in Chu State, but his ideal could not be realized.
