I saw a debate topic the other day, "If possible, do you want to be a rational person forever?" .
Rationality and sensibility seem to be an eternal topic. Many people will feel that many people's entanglement, struggle and confusion are all struggles between rationality and sensibility.
When I make a choice, I must choose what I want, from the heart. But interestingly, in psychological tests such as MBTI, I am a person who is more inclined to rational analysis.
Is it contradictory? Not exactly.
I feel that many people seem to have fallen into such a misunderstanding. Rational people are cold and heartless, robots. They make the most favorable decisions with meticulous logic and reasonable judgment, regardless of emotions.
But in fact, I think all rational analysis must contain perceptual elements, and we can't really become programmed robots. Those well-thought-out decisions without considering outside ideas can't be said to be irrational at all.
Rational judgment also contains what is most important to you. If you are a money-oriented person, then your rational judgment will choose the option with the greatest money gain; If you are a love-oriented person, then your rational judgment will choose a better option for love; If you are a person with strong self-awareness, then your rational judgment will choose the option that suits you best and makes you feel happiest.
What makes the decision after such analysis and judgment irrational?
After careful consideration, I decided to give up my thriving job and go home to have children. Although I gave up my career success, I was more concerned about the happiness and satisfaction as a mother.
After careful consideration, I decided to choose the major of ancient books restoration, which seems to have no future. Although I know that my future work will be more difficult, harder and more boring, it is something I like after all.
After careful consideration, I accomplished my most important thing. Why can't such a thinking process be regarded as rationality?
According to the definition of Baidu Encyclopedia, rationality refers to people's ability to confidently and courageously face the status quo, quickly and comprehensively understand the reality, analyze various feasible schemes, and then judge the best scheme and implement it effectively in order to obtain the expected results with a normal mentality.
The reason why you think others are irrational is probably that the other person and you have different demands for value. You think he didn't choose a well-paid job, a beautiful girl or a chance to go to the north, but with honey or arsenic, how do you know which one is better?
It's not a hard decision, but you can bear the consequences, sensibility and rationality yourself. What is the conflict?
I once saw a scene in a romance novel, in which the protagonist was a calm and rational high IQ school, and then made an impulsive decision in the eyes of others. What he said to the heroine is that my judgment tells me that you are more important.
Back to the first two topics-
Do you want a rational analysis? If possible, do you want to be a rational person forever? I think I will if I can. More confusion is actually not a tear between reason and sensibility. On the contrary, I am not rational enough to analyze what I want.
But fortunately, so far, I have not regretted my decision. I also hope that this state can be maintained.
I hope each of us can be responsible for our own decisions and be a person with no regrets.
