This is a biography of Confucius disciples compiled by Sima Qian according to the short table in The Analects of Confucius.
Ziyou is Ran Qiu, and his surname is Ran. Ziyou, commonly known as You Ran, is also called Youzi. He is twenty-nine years younger than Confucius. Ran Qiu, who was modest by nature, was a versatile man among Confucius disciples and was highly praised by Confucius. Ran Qiu is good at politics, especially at managing money. He used to be Ji's son. He is very good at leading troops to fight. In the eleventh year (484 BC), he served as commander-in-chief of Zuo's family, and defeated Qi with the tactics of infantry holding spears. Taking advantage of this victory, he persuaded Ji Kangzi to welcome Confucius who had been in exile for 14 years. Later, Ran Qiu was severely criticized by Confucius for helping Ji Kangzi collect money, but this did not affect their teacher-student relationship.
