Under the eaves of the East Palace Gate, there is a large Kowloon gold-plated plaque with the words "Summer Palace" written on it. Vigorous and powerful, it is said that this is the imperial pen of Emperor Guangxu. In order to write this plaque, Emperor Guangxu visited a teacher to study and told an interesting story about his family. After Empress Cixi misappropriated naval military funds to repair the Summer Palace, she ordered the Minister of Industry to find someone to write a large plaque on the East Palace Gate. The minister of the Ministry of Industry thought about it and felt that it was most appropriate to ask Emperor Guangxu to write it, and it would also be more beneficial to his future promotion and fortune, so he went to see the emperor. Emperor Guangxu was very happy to hear this. Without saying a word, he picked up his imperial pen and started writing on a piece of white paper spread out on the dragon table. The Minister of Industry took a look and found that the words "Summer Palace" were written crookedly and ugly. I had no choice but to make a plaque based on his handwriting and hang it up.
The day after the plaque was hung, Empress Dowager Cixi came to the Summer Palace from the Forbidden City. She got off the bridge in front of the East Palace Gate and became angry when she saw the newly hung plaque with bad characters. Immediately call for the Minister of Industry and ask who wrote the big plaque? The Minister of Industry did not dare to lie and truthfully stated that this was Guangxu Yan's handwriting. Cixi glared at him and said: "This word is so indecent, how can it be hung on the palace gate? Why don't you take it off for me!" When Guangxu learned about this, he broke out in a cold sweat. He brought the Minister of Industry to discuss it and decided to practice calligraphy to write the plaque well. But he couldn't write the word "Summer Palace" for several days and kept sighing. Seeing this, the minister boldly said to Guangxu: "In my opinion, writing behind closed doors is not as good as visiting a teacher to study!" Guangxu asked, "Who should I study from?" The minister replied: "When the garden was built, there was an old carpenter named Wang Yongfu who was good at writing. "Good character, I live in Liulang Village outside the garden, so it's better to ask him for advice. If it's inconvenient for the emperor to go out to visit the teacher, can he be invited to teach in the garden?" Guangxu thought it was reasonable and nodded in agreement.
The next morning, the Minister of Industry invited Wang Yongfu into the Yulan Hall. The old man heard that it was the Pope who wrote the letter, so he tried his best to refuse for fear of offending. After Guangxu showed humility to the old man, the old man agreed after seeing that the emperor was sincere in his studies. The old man took the self-study calligraphy stickers and taught calligraphy and writing to the emperor. Guangxu diligently recruited and treated old people, and after some hard study and practice, he finally developed good calligraphy.
One day, Guangxu summoned the civil and military ministers and wrote the vigorous and powerful three characters "Summer Palace" on the announcement paper, which won the applause of the ministers. Guangxu presented this calligraphy to the Empress Dowager Cixi for review. Lafayette expressed his satisfaction after seeing it and ordered a Kowloon gold plaque to be made and hung on the East Palace Gate.
