Romance of the Three Kingdoms, its historical origin is very clear. This book is based on the history of Wei, Shu and Wu in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. This historical time began in the first year of Emperor Zhong Ping of the Eastern Han Dynasty, that is, AD 184, and lasted until the first year of Jin Taikang, that is, the end of AD 280. The time span before and after is 96 years, generally speaking, a century, nearly 100 years.
So this 100 year history is not fiction. Its main official historical basis and its narrative timeline, including its characters and deeds, are based on the History of the Three Kingdoms written by Chen Shou, a historian of Jin Dynasty.
